Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political thuggery refers to the use of violence, intimidation, and other unlawful tactics by political actors to influence electoral outcomes. In Nigeria, political thuggery has been a persistent issue, with armed groups or "political thugs" being used by politicians to disrupt elections, intimidate voters, and create an atmosphere of fear. In Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State, political thuggery has been a significant problem, particularly during election periods, undermining the integrity of the electoral process. This study aims to assess the impact of political thuggery on electoral processes in Bauchi LGA, examining its effects on voter turnout, election results, and the overall legitimacy of elections.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political thuggery poses a serious threat to the integrity and credibility of elections in Bauchi LGA. Acts of violence, voter intimidation, and the disruption of polling processes can lead to a disenfranchised electorate, decreased voter turnout, and an overall lack of confidence in the electoral system. This study will investigate the extent to which political thuggery influences the electoral process in Bauchi, particularly in terms of its impact on voter behavior and electoral outcomes.
